Odor-Eaters Alternative: What to Use Instead (And Why)

The Short Answer
- What Odor-Eaters is: a long-running drugstore brand of insoles, foot powder, and sprays for foot and shoe odor.
- How it works: it absorbs. The insoles and powder soak up sweat and odor inside your shoe.
- What actually causes the smell: bacteria on your feet feeding on your sweat. Absorbing the smell does not stop the bacteria making it.
- The alternatives: other drugstore brands like Dr. Scholl's and Arm & Hammer, charcoal insole pads, shoe sprays, a foot deodorant, or DIY absorbers and the basics.
Odor-Eaters has been the drugstore name in foot odor for decades. The insoles, the foot powder, the spray. They are cheap and they are everywhere. But a lot of people use them for a while and notice the smell keeps coming back.
I dealt with bad foot odor for years, so I have tried most of this stuff. Below is a breakdown of what Odor-Eaters does, what actually causes the smell, and the other options worth knowing about.
What Odor-Eaters Actually Does
Give them credit. Odor-Eaters has been around forever, and most of their lineup is built around one idea: absorbing the smell.
The insoles use activated charcoal and baking soda to soak up sweat and odor inside your shoe. The foot powder does the same thing on your feet. The spray lays down a scent and some odor absorbers in the shoe. It is cheap, it is easy to find, and on a fresh pair it works fine for a little while.
So if your feet are only a little funky now and then, Odor-Eaters might be all you need. No argument here.
What Actually Causes the Smell
Your feet smell because of bacteria feeding on your sweat. Doctors call it bromodosis, and the Cleveland Clinic lays out the basics. Those bacteria live on your skin and they keep working all day long.
That is the part an odor absorber does not touch. An insole soaking up the smell is like putting a sponge under a leak. It catches the mess until it is soaked, but the leak is still leaking. The insole fills up, the powder gets damp, and by the end of a long day the smell is back, because nothing dealt with the bacteria.
That is why the fix that lasts works on your feet, not just inside your shoe.
The Best Odor-Eaters Alternatives
If Odor-Eaters is not cutting it, you have plenty of options. Here are the ones worth knowing about, grouped by how they work.
Other drugstore brands (same absorbing approach)
Dr. Scholl's Odor-X. The other big drugstore name. Sprays, powders, and insoles that absorb and cover the smell, a lot like Odor-Eaters. A near head-to-head swap if you just want to try a different brand. Around $6 to $10.
Arm & Hammer. Baking-soda based insoles, sprays, and powders. Cheap and easy to find. Same idea as Odor-Eaters: it soaks up the smell. Around $5 to $8.
Insole alternatives
Zorpads. Thin activated-charcoal pads that stick into your shoe instead of a full insole. A more modern take on the odor-absorbing insole, and less bulky. Same limit as any absorber, but easy to live with. Around $10 to $15.
Shoe sprays
Lumi Outdoors. A natural shoe spray a lot of people use in place of insoles. Smells clean. Natural formulas tend to be gentler, so if your shoes are really bad, set your expectations. Around $13.
FunkAway or Hex. Sprays built to break down odor in the shoe rather than just soak it up. More aggressive than a natural spray. Around $8 to $13. I went deeper on shoe sprays in my best shoe deodorizers guide.
Foot deodorants
A foot deodorant. A different approach from everything above. Instead of going in your shoe, a foot deodorant goes on your feet. Roll-ons and sprays both exist. This is the one I land on, and I get into why below.
The Roll-On
Scentless, dries in 5 seconds, gets between the toes.

You can also skip products. Cedar inserts, charcoal bags, or plain baking soda absorb odor like an insole for less money. And the basics still matter: wash and dry your feet daily, rotate your shoes so they get a day to dry out, and wear cotton or wool socks instead of synthetic. If your feet sweat a lot, that is a separate problem from smell. An antiperspirant or a doctor visit handles the sweat side, which I covered in my best antiperspirant for sweaty feet guide.
What I Use
For my feet, I use a foot deodorant roll-on. Instead of absorbing the smell, it stops the odor at the source, right on your skin. It is scentless, it dries in about five seconds, and the slim bottle gets between your toes where the bacteria sit.
For the shoes, I use a shoe spray. That handles the smell already soaked into the shoe, which is the part an insole just sits on top of.
You can try either of them by themselves, but together they work better. Here is the link for the kit.
It is not the cheapest thing on the shelf. Odor-Eaters is cheaper up front. But I got tired of buying insoles and powder over and over and still smelling it. I would rather stop the smell than keep soaking it up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Odor-Eaters actually work?
They do something. The insoles and powder absorb sweat and odor inside your shoe, so they can cut the smell for a while. The catch is they absorb until they are full, then the smell comes back. They do not stop the bacteria on your feet that cause the odor in the first place.
What is a natural odor eater?
Stuff like baking soda, activated charcoal, and cedar all absorb odor naturally, and that is what a lot of insoles and pouches use. They are fine for soaking up smell in a shoe. Just remember that absorbing the smell and stopping it are two different jobs.
Can I use a foot deodorant instead of Odor-Eaters insoles?
Yes, and they work in different ways. An insole sits in your shoe and soaks up odor. A foot deodorant goes on your skin and stops the odor at the source. If the smell keeps coming back with insoles, treating your feet directly is the next step.
What is the best Odor-Eaters alternative?
There is no single best for everyone. Look for something that stops odor at the source instead of just absorbing it, that is easy to use every day, and that reaches between your toes. If your shoes already smell, add something for the shoes too.
