Why Do My Feet Smell Like Vinegar? How to Stop It

The Short Answer
- It is an acid. Bacteria on your feet eat your sweat and leave acids behind. One of them is acetic acid, the same acid that is in vinegar.
- It is not about being clean. Everyone has these bacteria. You can shower twice a day and still get it.
- More sweat, more sour. Long shifts, closed shoes, and hot days make it stronger.
- The fix is feet and shoes. The shoe holds the sweat and the bacteria, so it puts the smell right back on a clean foot.
You showered this morning. You put on clean socks. And at the end of the day, you take your shoes off and there it is. Sharp. Sour. Like somebody opened a bottle of vinegar in the room.
Feet smell like vinegar because the bacteria that live on everyone's skin eat your sweat and turn it into acids. One of those acids is the same one that is in vinegar. It has nothing to do with how clean you are. It has everything to do with how much your feet sweat and where that sweat ends up.
Why Do My Feet Smell Like Vinegar?
Your feet have around 250,000 sweat glands, per the National Library of Medicine. Fresh sweat is mostly water and salt. It barely smells.
The smell starts when the bacteria on your skin get to it. They eat the sweat and break it down, and what they leave behind is a mix of acids. One of them is acetic acid. That is the acid in vinegar. Same chemical, same sour smell.
A podiatrist at Cleveland Clinic puts it simply: the more your feet sweat, the stronger the vinegar smell gets. More sweat means more food for the bacteria, and more acid.
Vinegar, Cheese, or Ammonia: What Your Smell Is Telling You
Foot odor is not one smell. The bacteria make different things depending on what they are eating and how long it sits. Here is how to read yours.
What Your Foot Smell Means
Same cause underneath: bacteria and sweat.
| Smells like | What you are smelling | Usually shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Vinegar, sour | Acids from sweat, like acetic acid | Sweaty days, long shifts |
| Cheese | Isovaleric acid, which smells like rancid cheese | Sweat left in socks and shoes |
| Ammonia, cat pee | Urea in sweat breaking down | Hard workouts, not enough water |
Most people get a mix. Sour on the feet, cheesy in the socks. If yours is sharper, more like a litter box, I covered that in why feet smell like ammonia and why shoes smell like cat pee. The full rundown of every foot smell is in why do your feet smell.
Why Is It Worse on Some Days?
Because some days you sweat more, and some days the sweat has nowhere to go.
- Long shifts in closed shoes. Twelve hours on your feet in work shoes, nursing clogs, or boots. The sweat builds all day with no air.
- The same pair two days in a row. A shoe needs about a day to dry out. Put it back on damp and you start the day where yesterday ended.
- Socks that trap sweat. Some fabrics hold sweat against your skin. More on that in the best socks for smelly feet.
- No socks at all. Flats, loafers, and sneakers without socks soak the sweat straight into the shoe.
- Heat and stress. Hot days and stressful days both turn up the sweat. Cleveland Clinic also lists hormone changes as a cause.
Why Does It Come Back Right After a Shower?
This is the part that drives people crazy. You wash your feet. They smell fine. A few hours later, sour again.
That is because the shoe was never washed. Every day of sweat soaks into the insole and the lining, and the bacteria live in there too. You put a clean foot into that shoe, start sweating, and the whole thing starts over.
So if the smell keeps coming back, it is not you. It is the shoe. I dug into this in why your feet smell even after washing.
How to Stop Your Feet From Smelling Like Vinegar
- Dry all the way, between the toes too. After a shower, the spaces between your toes stay damp the longest. Take ten extra seconds there.
- Change your socks on long days. A fresh pair halfway through a shift takes away the sweat before the bacteria get to it.
- Rotate your shoes. Two pairs, switching every day, so each one gets a full day to dry.
- Treat the inside of your shoes. Drying slows the smell down, but the bacteria are still in there. Something made for shoe odor handles that part.
- Put deodorant on your feet. A foot deodorant on the bottoms and between the toes, before your socks go on. If you are wondering about using your regular one, I answered that in can you put deodorant on your feet.

And yes, one of the most common home fixes for vinegar feet is a vinegar foot soak. I know. I covered how that one works, and what it is like to do every day, in my list of foot odor home remedies.

Usually not. For most people it is sweat and bacteria, and the routine above takes care of it.
But sour does not always mean sweat. At one point I had a fungus between my toes, and it smelled sour too. The difference was the itch and the skin peeling between my toes. That is athlete's foot, and it is a different problem with a different fix. If that sounds like you, read how to tell athlete's foot from smelly feet.
Cleveland Clinic also points out that some conditions make you sweat a lot more, like hyperhidrosis, thyroid problems, and diabetes. See a podiatrist if:
- The smell does not get better after a few weeks of a real routine.
- The skin itches, peels, cracks, or looks white and soggy between your toes.
- You have a sore, a cut, or redness that is not healing.
- You sweat through your socks even on cool days, sitting still.
What I Use
I dealt with foot odor for years. Whatever your feet smell like, sour, cheesy, or sharp, the routine that fixed mine is the same one.
In the morning I put the roll-on on the bottoms of my feet and between my toes before my socks go on. It stops the smell at the source. At night I hit my shoes with the shoe spray so they are not loaded up for tomorrow. My uncle Fredy and I made both. Together they are the Foot Reset Kit.
The sweat is going to happen every day, so the routine happens every day too. It is a deodorant. You put it on your feet the same way you put one on under your arms, without thinking about it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop my feet from smelling like vinegar?
Cut down the sweat that sits on your skin and in your shoes. Dry between your toes, change socks on long days, rotate two pairs of shoes, and treat the inside of your shoes. Look for a foot deodorant that stops odor at the source and is easy enough to use every day. Here are the foot deodorants I make for sweaty feet.
What is smelling vinegar a symptom of?
On your feet, it is almost always sweat and bacteria. If you smell vinegar all the time, everywhere, even when nothing is there, that is a different thing and worth asking a doctor about. If the sour smell comes with itching or peeling between your toes, it may be athlete's foot.
What do diabetic feet smell like?
Diabetes can make some people sweat more, so normal foot odor can be stronger. But a smell by itself is not a sign of diabetes. If you have diabetes and notice a bad smell coming from a sore, a cut, or a spot that is not healing, call your doctor right away.
Why do my feet smell like apple cider vinegar?
Same cause. Apple cider vinegar and white vinegar both get their sour smell from acetic acid, and your foot bacteria make acetic acid from sweat. Some people just describe it as the apple cider kind.
Why do my socks smell like vinegar?
Your socks soak up the sweat all day, and the bacteria come with it. If they still smell sour after washing, wash them inside out on a hot cycle and let them dry all the way. Fabrics that pull sweat away from your skin, like merino wool, help.
